DIY Ugly Sweaters


‘Tis the season for ugly sweaters! Sure, you can buy one, but a DIY sweater really takes the kitsch to a whole new level. Get inspired by some of our DIY favorites we’ve rounded up below so you can don your creation at your next holiday shindig with friends or win your office’s ugly sweater contest!





Unleash your inner artist

Use puffy paint to create your masterpiece.

What you’ll need:


Fabric paint or puffy paint

Glitter iron-on transfer sheets

Fashion glitter


  1. Use puffy or fabric paint to create a light strand.
  2. Create a light bulb template on card stock and use it to trace out bulb shapes on glitter iron-on transfer sheets.
  3. Cut out bulbs and secure to the sweatshirt.
  4. Create snowmen or anything you fancy (be creative!) using fabric paint and fashion glitter.

Show off the ugly ties

Who knew tacky holiday ties could be so versatile?

What you’ll need:


4-6 men’s ties


Liquid stitch

Fabric tape


Jingle bells

Needle and thread


  1. Arrange ties on a sweater and secure with fabric tape.
  2. Tie ribbon in a bow and attach to top of ties with liquid stitch.
  3. Sew on buttons and jingle bells with needle and thread.

Let it shine

What you’ll need:

Thrift store vintage sweater

Tacky holiday garb


Plastic yarn needle


Twist ties

Cardboard or poster board

Battery-operated lights


  1. Arrange your decorations on the sweater. Take a photo to use as a guide.
  2. Tuck cardboard or poster board inside sweater to prevent sewing front and back together. Sew your larger decor pieces to the sweater.
  3. Secure smaller items with twist ties.
  4. Create a candy cane pocket with felt and sew to the sweater.
  5. Poke lights through the sweater.

Wear your favorite holiday movie

Don’t wear your heart on your sleeve when you can wear your favorite festive flick on your sweater.

What you’ll need:

Sweater or sweatshirt

Felt in a variety of colors


Fabric glue


  1. Planning is everything, so decide what movie or theme you’re going for.
  2. Trace and cut out characters, objects, and design elements.
  3. Arrange and secure with fabric glue.

Hold my beer

What you’ll need:

Thrift store cable-knit sweater or vest

Festive pot holder - be sure your beverage of choice fits!

Needle and thread

Any other holiday garb of your choice


  1. Sew pot holder upside down to sweater with needle and thread.
  2. Sew on any other holiday accouterment.

If you only have 5 minutes before the guests arrive

Here’s a DIY for the procrastinators! Take an old sweater (or skirt) from your donate pile, hot glue as many wrapping bows as you can, and you’re done!
