The definition of family seems to change with the times and the individual. Whether your family is blood related or one you have chosen, they play a big part in the person you’ve become. 😀 On May 15th, we’re honoring these special relationships around the world for International Day of Families!
Even though many of us are practicing physical distancing, it’s still important to set aside time to maintain our social connections for our emotional and mental health. We’ve come up with some creative ways you can observe this family-centric holiday and keep those strong bonds intact with your loved ones (from a distance). 🤗
Video Chats 🖥
Thank goodness for the internet! Having a strong WiFi connection and smart phone makes it SO much easier to stay in touch with the people we care about. Having a video conversation over Google Hangouts, Skype, or FaceTime is a great way to stay connected while being physically apart.
Watch Movies Together 🎬
From Netflix to Disney+, there are a bunch of different streaming services that have movies from your childhood. Watch something nostalgic with your family over the phone to share an experience and reminisce about fun memories spent together!
Make a Spotify Playlist Together 🎶
Do you have a song you just can’t get out of your head and want to share it with your family? Make a shared playlist on Spotify! You all can add tunes that make you think of each other or something happy to brighten up your loved one’s day! Want to make this a more interactive experience? Get on Zoom and have a dance party! 💃
Send Snail Mail 📩
Since emails and social media have become so popular, it’s rare that we receive letters that aren't junk mail anymore. Write a letter or send a tiny care package to a member of your family. Have kids? Have them create a Crayola masterpiece to send to grandparents or cousins!
Family Game Night 🎲
Houseparty is a free face-to-face social network where you and your family can play a variety of games together! All you have to do is download the app on your mobile device and let the game of charades begin!
Enjoy an Online Class Together 🏋
Exercise classes at the gym may be closed, but you can still get a workout in with your family from home! Unroll your yoga mat and visit YouTube to look up different kinds of online fitness classes available. You can also just put on some sneakers and walk around your neighborhood while FaceTiming.
Make a Phone Call 📞
Sometimes just hearing a loved one’s voice is enough to put a smile on your face! Pick up the phone and spend some quality time catching up with a family member you haven’t spoken to in a while. They will appreciate the gesture and it will show that you were thinking of them. 😊
We encourage you to take time on May 15th to focus on what family means to you! We think these suggestions are a great way to start! 😉
